CMS’ Identity Management System Wins 2021 FedHealthIT Award
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) was recognized as a winner of the 2021
FedHealthIT Innovation Award for its enterprise Identity Management System (IDM) – a program led,
designed, and implemented by C-HIT. The 7th Annual FedHealthIT Innovation Awards recognized and
honored the Federal Health technology and consulting community by celebrating programs nominated
and selected by their peers for driving innovation and results across the Department of Veterans Affairs,
Military Health, Health and Human Services, and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
CMS, in partnership with C-HIT, successfully modernized its legacy Enterprise Identity Management
(EIDM) system, which manages secure access for more than 200 CMS applications. During this project,
the CMS IDM Team and C-HIT introduced technology transformation and modernization by
implementing the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), cloud-based SaaS, and serverless architecture for
IDM. This allowed better application integration via an API-based architecture, resulting in a stateless and
loosely coupled IDM system and easy integration of applications. The team migrated the legacy EIDM to
the AWS cloud, while integrating it with industry-leading tools for authentication, identity proofing,
reporting, and access management.
This is the second year in a row that a C-HIT project for CMS has won the FedHealthIT Innovation award
on the heels of last year’s win for the CMS Enterprise Portal. “We are proud of our partnership with
CMS, where both parties are equally committed to driving change and transformation for delivering
immediate and lasting value within the enterprise,” said Manoj Chaganti, C-HIT’s Chief Operating
Officer.
